Can walking help diagnose health issues? Absolutely. Walking is not only great exercise, but also an effective way to assess your cardiac and pulmonary function. Have you heard of the 6-Minute Walk Test? This simple, cost-effective and safe test is now widely recognized by doctors and patients alike.
How far can you walk in six minutes?

News about young people suffering sudden myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest has frequently made headlines recently. Late nights, high stress, lack of exercise and irregular diets have prompted more and more people to pay attention to their heart age.
The 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a simple, non-invasive and low-cost tool for cardiopulmonary function assessment. It requires no sophisticated equipment or strenuous exercise.
Why six minutes, instead of three or ten?
Back in the 1960s, doctors began using walking tests to evaluate patients’ exercise capacity. It was later found that six minutes strikes the perfect balance. A shorter duration fails to reflect a person’s actual physical condition, while a longer one tends to tire patients out and compromise test results.
Proven over decades of clinical practice, the 6-Minute Walk Test has been included in multiple authoritative clinical guidelines in China for heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other conditions.
Who is suitable for this test?
According to professional consensus, the 6-Minute Walk Test is applicable to the following groups:
Cardiovascular diseases: Coronary heart disease, heart failure, pulmonary arterial hypertension, etc.
Respiratory diseases: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, etc.
Rehabilitation assessment: Cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and post-operative recovery
Other conditions: Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke conditions, elderly frailty, diabetes, etc.
Even healthy people can use it to evaluate their basic exercise capacity.
Who should not take this test?
Naturally, the test is not suitable for everyone. It is absolutely contraindicated in the following cases:
Acute myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, severe arrhythmia
Uncontrolled hypertension (systolic blood pressure > 180mmHg)
Acute pulmonary embolism, acute infectious diseases and other acute illnesses
Safety comes first. A medical assessment by a doctor is mandatory before the test.
How to interpret the results?
Healthy adults: The standard 6-minute walking distance ranges from 400 to 700 meters.
Patients with heart failure:
Less than 150 meters: Severe impairment
150 to 450 meters: Moderate impairment
450 meters and above: Mild impairment
Patients with COPD or pulmonary arterial hypertension:
A 6-minute walking distance below 300 meters indicates a poor prognosis.
Yufeng Medical 6-Minute Walking Test System
To deliver higher accuracy and intelligence for the 6-Minute Walking Test (6MWT), Yufeng Medical has launched the dedicated 6-Minute Walking Test System, providing an all-in-one solution for clinical and rehabilitation facilities.
The 6MWT is primarily used to evaluate treatment outcomes for patients with moderate to severe cardiopulmonary diseases, as well as to assess patients’ basic motor function. During the walking test, the system monitors electrocardiogram, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation in real time via wireless communication, and generates assessment results automatically.
This test features simplicity, good repeatability and high safety. It is especially ideal for evaluating cardiac function in patients with chronic heart failure of varying severity, and its data can serve as a reference for clinical diagnosis and exercise prescription formulation.
Core Features
Multi-dimensional data analysis: Comprehensive reports covering heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, pulmonary function and more.
Compatible with the new-generation rehabilitation management system.
Automatic distance calculation, eliminating manual lap counting.
Mobile Workstations
Desktop PC Workstation: Supports standardized reports and bulk data export.
Handheld Pad Workstation: Adaptable to various scenarios. It synchronizes vital sign monitoring with the PC terminal in real time and generates reports automatically.
